The story
Catuai was bred deliberately rather than found as a mutation, developed by Brazil's Instituto Agronomico de Campinas from 1949 by crossing yellow Caturra with Mundo Novo, initially under the code name H-2077. Its name comes from Guarani and is usually translated as very good. After years of pedigree selection the variety was officially released in Brazil in 1972 and began spreading into Central America from 1979, where it became commercially important in countries such as Honduras, Costa Rica and Guatemala. Catuai combines Caturra's compact, high yielding habit with some of Mundo Novo's vigour, comes in both red and yellow fruited forms, and is valued for reliability and good, if not outstanding, cup quality.
