The story
Mundo Novo arose as a natural cross between Bourbon and Typica, found growing in the municipality of Mineiros do Tiete in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, in 1943. It takes its name from the nearby town of Mundo Novo (now Urupes), where the variety was further developed and selected. The plant is tall and vigorous with high yield potential and good cup quality, and after selection work it was distributed to Brazilian farmers from 1952 onward, becoming one of the most widely planted varieties in Brazil and, later, in Peru. Its main drawbacks are its height, which makes harvesting harder, and only moderate resistance to disease, and it went on to become a parent of Catuai when crossed with Caturra.
