Java

Java is where Indonesian coffee began, and its arabica is grown mainly on the Ijen Plateau at the eastern end of the island, above 1,400 metres. Five large estates founded in the colonial era, among them Blawan, Jampit and Pancur, still work the high ground the Dutch first planted in the 1690s. Wet-processed rather than wet-hulled, Java arabica is cleaner and brighter than Sumatra, with a heavy body, a sweet overall impression and a long finish. Some of it is deliberately aged into the mellow, spicy style once called Old Government or Old Brown Java.
