Maragogipe

Maragogipe is a natural mutation of Typica discovered near the town of Maragogipe in Bahia, Brazil, in 1870. A single dominant gene gives the plant unusually large leaves, wide spacing between nodes and, most famously, oversized beans, which is why it is often nicknamed the elephant bean coffee. The mutation carries Typica's susceptibility to disease and, on its own, a low yield, so it was never grown at scale on its own, but it spread in small quantities through Central America as a curiosity and speciality lot. Its lasting significance is as a parent variety, crossed with Pacas in El Salvador to create Pacamara and, more recently, with Caturra to create Maracaturra.
