Villa Sarchi

Villa Sarchi is a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon that emerged in the Alajuela province of Costa Rica, generally dated to the 1950s or 1960s and named after the town of Sarchi. Its compact growth and tolerance of high altitude and strong winds made it well suited to Costa Rica's mountainous growing regions. Cup quality is considered excellent, sweet and fruity, close to other Bourbon derived varieties, though yield is modest. From the 1970s breeders crossed Villa Sarchi with the rust resistant Timor Hybrid to create the Sarchimor family of varieties, extending its influence well beyond Costa Rica even though the pure variety remains most closely associated with its home country.
